Deforestation by Jessie Egar

Jessie spoke at our demonstration outside Maidenhead Town Hall last night, and explained why protecting the trees of Maidenhead Golf Course is so important for the health and wellbeing of our community.

Deforestation is the action of clearing a wide area of trees

This is a problem in people’s lives. We have to stop.

People say it will be hard and we cannot change

This is not true, this is not the case. If we all work together and try, we can make a difference. We can change one step at a time, we can evolve and get used to these changes one at a time one by one.

One of the effects of deforestation is flooding

Trees provide a barrier to the movement of water and can slow down the speed of a flood. Deforestation exacerbates the problems facing villages, towns and cities across the world, creating financial losses to the economy and deaths. But are we worried about the trees? No, we cut down more to replace the structures that were torn down. Do we learn from our mistakes? No, we do it all over again.

Animals and birds live in trees

Imagine if someone came to your house and trashed it.  You would want to sue for your losses.  Animals like their habitats, they would be devasted, but be unable to protect themselves and their families. The number of animals then decrease due to a lack of food that could be obtained from the trees.

Trees absorb greenhouse gases

The process is called photosynthesis, this is where trees absorbs carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases and turn them into less polluted air that is more sustainable for many generations to come.

10,000 years ago England was a forest

A beautiful place full of wildness and wonder. A place for animals and humans to leave peacefully with ample food and water. Trees providing shelter, but not to excess in a way that damaged the environment.

The human-race became greedy

They took down many trees and created concrete and metal buildings, urban structures that dominate the landscape.  This has created a financial craving, a desire for more. But, at what cost?

Our future is dependent on healthy people

A healthy lifestyle is dependent on clean air. Developers will need to provide filters to clean the air for people to stop them getting sick from the pollutants. Millions of people already suffer from asthma and bronchial conditions, and that has had an adverse effect on the days that people have had to work and live.

How can we change I hear you ask?

Be resourceful and try to use what we already have.  Use empty offices to convert into housing.  Since more people are working from home, we already have an increase in empty offices. If we really must build more houses, let’s make them more eco-friendly and more sustainable.  A house on stilts maybe with a garden underneath and keep the trees so we can breathe.

It’s not too late to change

So in summary of everything I have talked about today, deforestation is hurting us, hurting our planet, hurting our animals and destroying all we have.  It is destroying everything and it’s not too late to change.  But it is to late too ignore this crisis.

Thank you for listening.
