Highlighting the final days of our petition

We’ve been highlighting the final days left on our online petition with a ’12 days to petition’ countdown.

In June we lodged our online petition with our council, asking them to Create Maidenhead Great Park on the publicly owned land currently leased by Maidenhead Golf Club.  We are calling for them to deliver this environmental and amenity benefit, rather than developing this 132-acre area of parkland into a high density housing estate, with 2,600 new dwellings.

Despite the fact that coronavirus restrictions have limited our ability to engage with people face to face, we already have nearly 4,000 signatures.  This makes our petition the third most popular online petition to our council ever, and demonstrates huge levels of community support for keeping this space green.

We have exceeded the 1,500 threshold enabling us to ask for our petition to be debated at a Full Council Meeting.  But we’d like as many local people as possible to have their say before our petition closes on 10 December, so that we can show the depth of feeling in our community on this issue.

This Green Belt land was given to the people of Maidenhead by Lord Desborough, and although there is a footpath running across the golf course, it wasn’t until the first lockdown when the golf course was closed, that many local people were able to explore this parkland for the first time.

Local people must have a say in its future.  Anyone aged 18 or over and living in the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead can sign the petition.

Creating Maidenhead Great Park will protect the thousands of mature trees and wildlife habitats here.  It will continue to provide a green lung for our town, and it will improve the physical and mental health of all those who live and work in this rapidly expanding town.

A good environment promotes good health and creates a good economy.  We must place the appropriate value on our greenspace now.  It is worth much more to our town if kept green for future generations, than if it is sold off to a developer for short term gain.
