With the support of Maidenhead Golf Club, we’re organising a Woodland Naming event on Easter Monday 1 April, from 4.30pm.

As well as an official wood naming ceremony, there will be ‘Woodland Nature’ talks by members of Wild Maidenhead and self-guided woodland walks to follow.

Tina Quadrino, chair of the Maidenhead Great Park campaign group, explains:

“Around 40 per cent of the publicly-owned land at Maidenhead Golf Course is woodland, providing important habitats for wildlife, including deer and many types of woodland birds, as well as protected species like owls, bats and kestrels. Protecting greenspace and biodiversity is a vital part of the steps we must take to prepare for and mitigate against the effects of climate change.

“Whilst the five acres of ancient woodland on the golf course is called Rushington Copse, the rest of the woodland areas have never been named.  On Easter Monday, as part of our campaign to raise awareness of their value to local wildlife and people, and to stop their destruction by Legal & General’s developers Cala Homes, they will be officially named ‘Desborough Woods’.

“We hope lots of local people will take the chance to join our Woodland Naming event to explore the woodland areas at Maidenhead golf course and find out more about the wildlife that depends on them.”

The event is free and no booking is required.

To take part in our event, you can access the golf course via the public footpath at Clifton Close (off Braywick Road) or Shoppenhanger’s Road (next to Frederick’s Hotel). Walk along the footpath until you reach our display.
